Chandler, Arizona was named after a veterinarian, Dr. A.J. Chandler, who in 1891 settled in the Arizona area. The town began in 1912; the Hotel San Marcos opened in 1913. Dr. Chandler was the first mayor of Chandler.

In Historic Downtown Chandler there are two large bronze statues. One is of Dr. A. J. Chandler, and the other is Frank Lloyd Wright, a friend of Dr. Chandler’s. Back in the 1920’s, Frank Lloyd Wright and Dr. A. J. Chandler met and became friends. They wanted to work together on several projects in Chandler, Arizona including new “resort in the desert” type housing, a remodeling of the San Marcos Hotel and a water garden. None of these projects were ever completed, however, because of the depression.
